Going to the Library - once a week

For the past few weeks I have made a trip with my daughter to the local library. Our closest library is very old and small, but it is charming and the librarians are pretty friendly. There's quite a wealth of subject books to choose from and these have helped me come up with interesting ideas and things to study. Holland also gets to choose as many books as she wants from the readers...of which I am pushing her to choose the harder books, not just the early readers. She can read beautifully and enjoys it so much...I want her to go to the next level. I'm hoping by the summer to get her into chapter books (it's a bit soon, but she can do it). She has told me adamantly that she doesn't like books without pictures, so I will have to do some research and find chapter books with pictures!
Next week we are planning on going to the Big New Library Center that is further away and more crowded. However, their children's section seemed quite good when I was there last. They also have a gift shop and a small cafe. The only thing I need now is permission to drink my coffee IN the library while I'm reading books...
I encourage all homeschoolers to take a mini field trip to the library at least once a month to stock up on awesome books about amphibians, volcanoes, the planets, inventions of the past, grossology and dancing. That's what we're studying anyhow...

FROZEN SHOULDER UPDATE

(I will try to update this more often. I am feeling well and able to sleep and do most things as normal. I would say I'm almost 80% recovered.)

This time last year I was in agony. I would fall to the floor crying in pain just from a slight bump or jarring into something. I tried to pull the trunk of my car closed and almost passed out in the garage. My children didn't understand why I was crying all the time, or why I was always in a bad mood.

Ever heard of FROZEN SHOULDER SYNDROME?

Nope? Me either. But guess what? It's fairly common. Especially in white women, over 40, and more likely in breast cancer victims. Read my first post about my pain and experience with the medical profession HERE.

I can't believe I have gotten to a point where I am functional again. I'm sleeping again. I'm almost better. But it hasn't been easy, or instant. It's been a journey of excrutiating pain, sleeplessness, fear, and then getting to a point of realizing that a doctor cannot help me without hurting me more. That is when I had to let go and believe that I would heal myself.

I don't like doctors anyway. So it was easy for me to tell the googly eyed orthopaedic surgeon NO I don't want to go under anesthetic and let you rip the tissue in my arm and possibly injure me worse (broken bones, torn muscles, more therapy and worse). I have an irrational fear of being put under already, and I can only imagine how that would've played out in the OR.

So I said NO and I moved on. I was still in pain, but the weeks of physical therapy I'd endured had given me a hope. I improved 20% with physical therapy. But I wasn't improving fast enough. They want you in and out and on your way! The thing that really gave me hope was that I saw others getting better. I learned all the exercises and I knew I could do them at home.

Things to purchase: an exercise ball - perfect for stretching out that shoulder. I got mine on Amazon for about $10 with a pump. Tennis balls - good for pushing on the wall with your shoulder.
That's it.
I also purchased a little machine that is supposed to help warm up the inside of your muscles. I only used it a few times because it was hard to do without another person to do it for you. Still hoping to use it in the future.

What I think really helped me get past the pain is VITAMIN D. I have no degrees behind my name, I am speaking from my own experience. I could see a correlation between lack of sunlight/limited movement and PAIN/limited extension. Get some sun every time it comes out. Sit in the window, the garage (to block wind etc.), put your head out the car window...make time for sunshine. And research Vitamin D and how much you can take. If you are deficient you can take high quantities for quite some time. Your doctor can even test you!

My last post was written in April 2011 when I had just decided to not have the surgery and I was still in pain. I would say that my pain truly subsided from a very high 10 to a 7 by the end of May. I was still stiff, I could still feel the pulling pain that was causing me to not want to move, but the knife plunging, gut wrenching, lightning strike pain was subsiding.

It is now January 2012 and I have to offer you HOPE if you're reading this. It will get better. You will recover yourself. I'm not 100 percent recovered. I can lift my arm over my head now. But I cannot move my arm out to the side like I used to. I still have to be careful that I don't do something to cause pain. My arm still falls asleep while I'm sleeping. But I'm sleeping better than I have in the past 5 years put together! (From November 2010 to March 2011 I was only getting a few minutes of sleep at a time).

More thoughts on FROZEN SHOULDER:

Once you've had this, you can get it again. You're more prone to it. Avoid this by staying active, getting sunshine and taking your vitamins.

If you work on a computer you are at risk. Computer work keeps you sedentary, inside, and you can get stiff. (My shoulder is stiff right now and achy). Move around a lot and stretch. Don't just sit there.

Talk about it. Tell everyone what you are going through. I was just chatting with a homeschooling gal I have recently met, telling her I was recovering from Frozen Shoulder. She looked at me and said "I have that". What? I would never have known if I hadn't mentioned it slightly. Now I can help her!

Try glucosomine condroitin. It's good for joints. I didn't try it, but I would if I had to do it again.

Maybe try a lamp that mimics the sun. The sunlamps are over $100 but if you live in a cold climate I think it would be helpful.

I met a lady at therapy who had just had a mastectomy and got frozen shoulder. If you are in pain and can't move it will cause your muscles to tighten and stop working. Try to get past the pain. I don't think the cortisone shots are a good idea, but might help in the short term.

Pain killers didn't work for me at all. Heat or cold packs work quite well.

Homeschool Books to Add to My Library

I got these on Amazon because I'm a Prime member and get mostly free 2 day shipping...but I also love the very cheap used books, and they charge $3.99 shipping, which I don't find unbearable, although I know it costs less in reality to ship one book.

Holland wants to make maps so I got a few map books. She LOVES science and wants to do more experiments. I think we're going to have to start making more regular trips to the library too!

I found out about "lapbooks" today, or notebooking. Totally suits us! We made a cute lapbook about Breakfast in America. Holland wrote down her favorite things for breakfast and we talked about what other people in America eat. I'm planning on expanding that to other countries and to lunch, snacks, and dinner...really fun. I'll post a picture soon!

Better Than Anthropologie - Snow Globe Tutorial

gather some old canning or jelly jars

add a bit of glitter

some mini faux trees

maybe a mini deer

equals an easy peasy snow globe - for about $1

I had a fun idea to make snow globes this year...sans the water...and I used leftover Mason/Ball jars that I've had laying around the garage. Of course, I gave away most of them in a yard sale, which was NOT smart, but luckily I've been scrounging for more from friends. Hee hee.
Then, today I saw a photo in Country Living of cute Mason jar snow globes! Wow! I searched on the anthropologie.com website and couldn't find it forever...then I found them. And I have to say mine are WAY better! I even found little deer to put in mine, and beautiful glass glitter...the anthro ones were SO dull and guess how much they wanted? $25-38 each. Uh? No.

Anyway...here's a quick tutorial on how I made mine, although it's a pretty self-explanatory craft.

You will need:

Various sized Mason jars with the lids (clean as possible)
White felt
Glitter (I used a silver glass glitter)
Small trees from the craft store (you can stock up after Christmas for next year!)
Small animals from toy or craft store (or from your kids toy boxes)
Glue gun and/or regular glue
Small rocks or natural things from outside (such as pinecones, acorns, leaves, etc.)
Little sticks or rounds of wood
Note: I had all these items already, so only purchased the vintage glitter for $5 and the deer were 99 cents a packet which I got 1/2 off at Hobby Lobby. I picked up a enormous bag of little trees for $2 last year. So my jars are only costing me less than a dollar each.

I was also digging through the garage and found a giant gallon size pickle jar! A giant snow globe!

Directions:

-Make sure your jars are super clean and dry.

-Cut your white felt to the size of the lid insert, or maybe a bit smaller. Glue on with hot glue.

-You may glitter or paint your miniature trees. I chose to glitter them with vintage German glitter. I painted the glue on with a brush and then sprinkled with glitter. Let dry completely before attaching to lid.

-Arrange your mini items on the now felted lid. When you are satisfied with placement, you may then glue with hot glue to the felted lid. Be ready with glitter to sprinkle on the glue that oozes out, this hides the shiny hot glue when it dries. You can also glitter anything else you like. I added extra snowy looking glitter to the "snowy ground".

-After everything is secured and dry, you can test to see if your jar will fit over. Make sure to allow for this when you are gluing, as the jar is narrower at the base and gets wider, so if you can squeeze through the opening you'll have more room to spread out (like the tree branches etc.).

-You may choose to glue your lids on, but I don't in case I want to rearrange or add something.

To raise your trees or animals inside the jar, you might try using little pieces of wood or cotton balls to give them the height you're looking for. I tried a rock in one and it looked pretty good with the glitter!

Add a tag to the lid with twine and you have an adorable wintery gift for anyone on your list!

More themes for snow globes: items from nature like acorns and twigs, birds and nests, woodland creatures, farm animals, poinsettias, fairies, mushrooms, doll furniture, tea set on a little table, etc., plus just keep your eyes open throughout the year for miniature anything to put into your Christmas crafts.

An Early Christmas Present - Kindle Fire from Amazon

Yesterday I received something in the mail...I knew it was coming (I'd been waiting three months!) and when it arrived I eagerly ripped open the brown happy face box it came in. And there it was, a shiny, plastic-wrapped black box. My Kindle. My Kindle Fire! Woot!

My husband and I decided we would get one for ourselves for Christmas. We don't usually buy big items and to us the $199 (free shipping though!) seemed like quite an extravagance. We knew we could never afford the ubiquitous i-Pad, although we'd love one, and the Kindle Fire does compare to that!
Our thoughts on the subject were hushed by the intent to use for homeschooling purposes, reading free books, and happy to accept the free month of Amazon Prime that comes with the purchase. Amazon Prime is a nice service if you love Amazon and free 2 day shipping, plus great movies and tv shows, and you can "borrow" one free book per month. Amazon Prime is $79 a year after the first free month with a Kindle purchase.

The black box I held in my eager hands is basically a little bit larger than a phone (it has a 7 inch screen!) and you plug it in for a while and it works! It even sets itself up after you put in the password for your wi-fi access. The wi-fi was super fast too...much faster than my laptop even.

I didn't even have to put my personal info in...it did it by itself! Whoa there Nelly! I was able to poke around at some of the fun features on my new Kindle before I had to charge it.
Getting used to the touch screen didn't take long, although I did have to figure out exactly where I needed to touch to get certain small buttons to work. (I don't have an i-Phone, but I assume it is similar to that interface).
There are easy links to Facebook, IMdb, Netflix, and tons more! I know I've barely scratched the surface in the 24 hours since it came to me. Last night I easily downloaded The Hunger Games and read it in a few hours on my Kindle...and that was fun! The backlight is rather bright so it may need adjusting, and I have yet to learn all the easy stuff (like tapping the screen insteady of sweeping across it to turn a page) that is built in. My little girl watched a video this morning and the sound was very good.

As far as the kids and homeschooling uses - they can use it when we eat out to keep busy (although I would certainly never get them each one!), there are tons of children's books available to read, they can watch educational and fun programs, and play games (but I doubt I will be tempted to allow them to start playing games online, unless they are educational). The next few months will show how often we do use our new toy as a homeschool resource!

The touch screen, of course, gets finger prints, but who's watching? Just wipe and go. And it is very sensitive, so be prepared to hit the back key when your elbow accidentally grazes the screen.

I can't wait to explore even more features of this miraculous little gizmo. With all the accessories on Amazon that one can purchase for the Kindle group of products...it's going to be fun using this device to find the perfect cover to protect it with!

If you can afford to give yourself a gift this Christmas, I think this would be a lovely addition to the techie gadget collection that might be growing on your bedside table. There are several other more affordable versions that I'm sure would be just as brilliant if you just want to read books (like me!). Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thai Carmelized Beef Salad - adapted from a Donna Hay recipe

There are a couple of Asian booths at the farmer's market so I've started picking up some more unusual things to make stir fry out of. Like, today I bought snow pea greens, just the tops and a bunch of green onions and some mustard green-like things. I'm going to put those all together with some garlic and peanut oil for supper. So good and easy and very little clean up as far as dishes are concerned.

I wanted to share with you a completely stunning recipe that my husband and I love. I changed it up a bit from the recipe book I pulled it from (Off The Shelf by Donna Hay), eliminating the pork (we don't eat pork because of parasites) and not adding the ground anise (which makes me gag).

Thai Carmelized Beef Salad

Put everything in a hot pan and heat on medium for a few minutes:
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup sugar (I use less)
2 small red chillies seeded and chopped OR a few shakes of dried red chili
1 tablespoon shredded ginger (I use the jarred kind that is
2 tablespoons fish sauce
2 tablespoons lime juice (I use the organic lime juice in the lime shaped bottle)

Add steak to pan and heat:
2 portions of whatever steak you have, we use top sirloin that has been grilled medium rare

Chop and toss together:
3 1/2 ounces green salad leaves
4 spring onions chopped
1/4 cup basil leaves
1/4 cup mint leaves
1/4 cup cilantro

I put the salad on a plate and drizzle with sauce and meat...totally amazing!

Meeting the Treadmill

I decided to take control of my body and start using the treadmill that has been sitting in my bedroom. I have to use it every day from now on...if I don't use it I have to do one of my workout dvds.

The main reason I have "decided" is that my daughter is getting married...sometime next year, no date set yet. But what if the date is sooner than later? I'll be stuck being the chubby mummy of the bride. That would suck.

I saw a super gorgeous dress I want to wear to the wedding too...so I have to get in shape (back in shape) and get rid of this 2 baby belly that feels heavier every day.

My jeans have gone down a size, but my gut hasn't. I think that is because I've been taking apple cider vinegar in water in the morning and it's cleansing my liver. Of course, since Halloween I've consumed all the leftover peanut m&ms and a few Twix bars. Just have to keep going I guess.

So that's my journey this week!

Dairy Free Frosting - made with Coconut Oil

I adore trying different ways of making recipes...tweaking here and there and coming up with something completely different.
Today I made dairy/egg free cupcakes and concocted a frosting to match. (You can also make it grain free by using Bob's Red Mill Bean Flour).

Dairy Free Frosting Recipe

3/4 cup coconut oil
1 3/4 cup powdered sugar (usually contains cornstarch, so check the ingredient list)
1/4 t. salt
1 T. powdered coffee (optional)
2 T. boiling water
1/4 cup cocoa

Place everything in the mixer and whip up. The boiling water should soften the coconut oil enough to beat in the sugar. Add vanilla or other flavoring if you desire. I used the oil that has the coconut fragrance, which I love, but the non-smelling kind is available.

This freezes well too, if you have some leftovers.

Making Marshmallows at Home

Homemade marshmallows are so yummy and so much easier to make than you might imagine!

I made some for Darcy's 4th birthday and it was fun and a lil' bit messy!

Prepare your 13x9 glass pan or jelly sheet by spraying with oil and dust with powdered sugar.

First step is to heat the sugar, water and agave nectar (I used agave in place of corn syrup or rice syrup, which I have tried before) in a large heavy-bottomed pan (it will bubble up so watch it). You will need to heat this mixture to 240 degrees, which takes about 12 minutes.

Step Two: While your sugars are heating up, take your gelatin (I used beef gelatin from the health food store) and sprinkle it over cold water in your mixer bowl. This will give it time to soften.

I used vanilla agave nectar, so I didn't add more vanilla, although you can if you want to

Step Three: After the gelatin is clear and looks fluffy, start the mixer and beat it for a minute. When your hot sugar syrup is ready pour it slowly onto the gelatin (mixer off), then start mixer on low and speed up (making sure you're not splattering hot syrup on yourself!).
Refrain from scraping the bowl. Just tap the mixing paddle on the side of the bowl to loosen the marshmallow.
This is the messy part - dump the marshmallows onto the prepared dish while they are still hot. You won't want to spread the mixture, just pour it around the dish. If you have to spread it make sure and use an oiled spatula or oil your hand and press down.

Try not to get the gooey stuff all over you in the process

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cool for a few hours in the refrigerator.

To cut the marshmallows you can use a sharp chef's knife or an oiled pizza wheel. Cut into the size you prefer. I cut mine into graham cracker sizes.

To make s'mores without a campfire, you can place a marshmallow on a cracker and microwave for 10 seconds, sprinkle with a few chocolate chips and top with another graham cracker. Eat the ooey gooey goodness and rinse to clean.

P.S. You do not have to add the egg whites to make this recipe work. I tried it with the egg white and I think it made it more sticky than anything else.

Dry erase boards are one of my new obsessions...I just purchased two new ones at Target and a used easel-style one at a yard sale... Now, we all know how amazing those Magic Erasers from Mr. Clean are...right? Did you know they clean off stubborn dry erase markings on old white boards? Yep. I was scrubbing away with a paper towel and started thinking I'd have to get a new board, when I realized that I should try some magic. Hey Presto! Brand new looking...thank you very much!

Do you have a cleaning tip? I'd love to hear how to get dog drool stains out of white carpet.

Learning all about Facebook "Landing" Pages

Teaching yourself how to add a landing page to your Facebook page isn't as easy as you might think. It is nice to know that there is more to Facebook than meets the eye though, as I was getting rather bored with it. Facebook is quickly becoming THE place to communicate with potential customers/clients if you're a business person. So that's good to know!

Laminator Wanted

As a lover of all office supplies and as a new homeschooling mom, I've heard that I need a laminator. I've laminated tons of things before in the school workroom or at work. But I've never used it just for a home project...but I'm getting excited, think of the possibilities! I really want to laminate my favorite recipes (the ones I use weekly), so I don't have to keep printing them out. We are loving using the dry erase markers and crayons right now, so that is a perfect reason to laminate! I found a cool pouch that I can tuck worksheets into, but what fun is that for mom?

Starting a Book Club

A few new friends of mine and I have decided to start a book club. Our first book is Memoirs of a Geisha (and no, I have not seen the movie!). We're going to meet once a month, hopefully, to discuss what we've read the previous month, and each member will take turns choosing a book for the club. It's going to be fairly simple to start...but who knows, maybe we'll graduate to cooking meals to the theme of the book, or meeting in different venues that would match the book...who knows? Are you in a book club? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I am getting stoked! I get to write a guest post at Hip Homeschool Moms next February! Writing for another blog or website is a good idea people...it helps get your blog out there and it keeps you on your best-writing-skills toes! I'm sure I will be writing from the "new to homeschooling" perspective but can include some of the fun stuff we're doing at our co-op too. What I'm Up To Now

Whew! My bad! I haven't been posting here in over a month...terrible! But I do have a valid excuse! We are a new homeschooling family...yay! I'll cover that in a sec...some other things going on:

1. I'm now teaching a cooking/baking class to high schoolers at our new homeschool co-op!

2. A few friends and I are starting a book club...we'll meet once a month to discuss!

3. The farmer's market and I are now addicted to each other...I go every Saturday and chat with my new friends: raw milk man, grass fed beef lady, and the lovely Menonite family that has great veggie prices. Oh, and Farm Girl Bakery...she makes the best turnovers and croissants (which I should not be eating!).

4. We adopted two Holland Lop-eared bunny rabbits - a lot of fun, but a lot of poop!

5. We're considering ducks or chickens (even though we live in the city limits I think we can have them as pets right?)

6. Holland (my middle daughter) is on a strict GRAIN FREE diet to help with her severe eczema. We're basically following the GAPS diet with some minor changes. We have yet to do the INTRO diet, because I'm scared of it...that part of course is the part that heals the gut lining so nutrition can be absorbed. I am making all our food from scratch and I am using local raw milk, local veggies, other organics, farm eggs (when available), and home grown stuff. She's also on high dose probiotics and a liquid vitamin, and she's drinking WATER! Unbelieveable! I'm trying a whole bunch of weird food on her, and she's eaten everything. God is good. She says I'm the BEST COOK EVER. Hee hee.

7. And, Darcy started a three day a week preschool (where Holland went) and she's doing great. It gives Holland and I some quiet time in the mornings to work on school stuff. Darcy is pretty demanding of Holland's time...so I'm trying to get the math, spelling and science done in the mornings. Darcy's teachers love her and she is the oldest in the class - much better than when we tried last year and she was the youngest.

8. Holland started piano lessons last week! Wow, it's so weird to list all this stuff...plus having bunnies, schoolwork, piano, ballet lessons on Saturdays and general house upkeep...what time is there for other stuff???

Goals:
Clean out the garage before winter and have a garage sale in the next few weeks to help with the purge.
Clean out the garden shed so we can store the pool and the patio furniture.
Dig up the garden and prepare for next spring (ha! right!)
Finish interior house projects - bathroom, french doors, baseboards, and any painting.

I did get curtains made last week! Woot!

And somewhere in there I want to make pillow covers, build a closet in the bedroom, organize the girls' bedrooms, clean the house and defrost the deep freeze.

I think I need help.

Homeschool - here's a cute site that is positive and uplifting:

Homeschooling is going great, I just have to learn to keep up with my daughter. She's so smart! It's also hard to know how much stuff you need to buy at first...I've been trying to stay low key and only buy a few workbooks and look online etc. I've been having success at flea markets finding curriculum and reading books. I'm not a big schedule person, so it's hard for me to write a school schedule and stick with it....not sure if that's an issue yet. Holland loves it and is happy. That is what counts. I wish we had a few more hours alone during the day to study, but overall we're doing well in our third week. She's already read 14 books all by herself!

My own inventions

So a few weeks ago I thought I had invented something, and I did. It was completely from my own mind, I hadn't seen it anywhere, I just did it.
I made a hotdog into an octopus for my children's lunch...they were into swimming lessons and I thought it would be fun to stick with the theme. I took a hotdog, cut the bottom half of it into 8 legs and dug out some eyes and a smiley face. Then I fried it gently in a pan to get the legs to stay stuck out. It came out beautifully and I was genuinely impressed with myself.

Today I decided to Google "hot dog octopus" and see if anyone else had invented it. And boy had they! Check out these seriously amazing hotdogs!

Lunch In A Box has some awesome ideas for bento boxes

Apparently, little hotdog creatures are HUGE in Japan and are prepared for lunches in their little Bento boxes (which I adore) and also invented 15 years ago when my daughter was in school. I made her an amazing lunch every day (in tupperware), but it was something like the Bento boxes...and I invented that myself too!

This has gotten me totally in the mood to research school lunch kits for kids...check back soon for some awesome links to lunch ideas since school is starting soon.

I've been getting into e-books lately...and I didn't know they were popular until a few days ago when I read about how they were becoming the latest fad. Somehow I'm always a few months ahead of the fads...or maybe I'm in ultra-tune with the vibes of society (not). Anyway, I just read Tell Your Time by Amy Lynn Andrews and it's really good! It's got some great techniques to manage your time and only takes about 15 minutes to read. Plus, I got a deal on it!

I've been busy, but have time to do nothing too...the girls have been having fun playing My Little Pony a lot, and Polly Pockets. We also got a little above-ground pool so they swim in there on the hot days. (Well, every day is hot!)

Here's a short list of what I've been doing:

1. Painting walls and furniture
2. Planning the bathroom rip out and remodel
3. Went to Branson a few times (hot!)
4. Gardening, watering, weeding
5. Cleaning up ponies and pollies
6. We did swimming lessons and are now doing ballet on Saturday mornings
7. Visiting garage sales, flea markets and any kind of sale
8. Blogging
9. Planning home schooling for the fall
10. Wishing I had a cabin on a lake to go to for the summer
11. And now getting used to this new Blogger format

Wednesdays are pretty busy

Today is my anniversary! I honestly have no idea where nine years just went. I guess Doug and I have been pretty busy, having two little girls, moving, living, working on projects, trying to figure it all out one day at a time...time just slips away doesn't it?

I've also used up tons of time today posting at The Blog Guidebook. I don't know if I wasted time, but I sure spent it...I posted four times already...but it was relevant. Hope the readers don't get teed off.

Monday I spent the entire day cleaning the house...I have a new babysitter coming over on Friday so I have to create a good impression, you know! Then I pooped out and couldn't finish. So today I've been working on the school room, throwing out papers in the recycle bin, and sorting magazines into piles that I want to keep or use for projects. The school room better be done by the time school starts...it doesn't seem like it will, but I'm hopeful.

So, tonight we're going to see a movie I hope...maybe Green Lantern, a total dude movie. It feels like summer doesn't it?!!

The Magic of Ikea

Somehow I forgot to mention that I found Ikea when I was close to Chicago, it was located in Bolingbrook, a very pretty little suburb of Chicago. This location is massive! And so clean and new...loved it! Holland went to Smaland for the first time and didn't want to leave. I didn't want to leave either frankly. It was lovely being somewhere familiar and yet utterly different because there were so many new things to see.
Sadly I didn't purchase my dream wardrobe because it was too long for my car...but next time I'm taking the minivan!
Didn't get any pictures there...too much to look at and do...but we got Swedish apple cake and I bought a few things to bring home. Can't wait till my next adventure in Ikea land.

Trip to Chicago...or drive for 8 hours and see where it gets you

My son-in-law to be graduated from Navy bootcamp last Friday (in Great Lakes, Illinois), so my daughter went to Chicago to see him. I decided I better drive up there too so I could see my girl before she heads off to England in July. She's such a world traveler! At the last minute I also decided to take Holland with me as my traveling companion...she did great. A little grouchy at first since she had to sit in a car for 8 hours, but she loved seeing Sissy and swimming in the hotel pool and visiting all those fun places.
We did have a good time, but everything was so expensive! I guess staying home every day does save money. We had a hard time finding healthy food though, that was the only downside.

Joplin Tornado

We live about an hour from Joplin. We got rain and high winds here...lots of lightning. We are fine, as is Springfield. We were actually on I-44 when all this was happening. The interstate was closed down further west of us...we didn't know what was happening until we got home.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Joplin, who lost a third of its structures and over 100 people killed. The deadliest tornado in the United States since 1947.
It's supposed to keep raining and flooding for the next few days. We all need a bit of a break.

Today is my Blogoversary!

I know it's been another year, but I don't even know how many years its been! Wowsers! I started blogging in 2002 when I married my husband. We had a "family" blog that fell by the wayside when I started my own blog...which I think was a year or two later. ~~Not sure, will have to check that out.~~ Hard to believe it's been 5 years!
I'm in the midst of re-designing the blog. Trying a few new things etc., so it will look different (dog) for a while.

Some things I'm working on around here:

Just started T-Tapp. It's one of the few exercise programs you can do with a wammy shoulder.

My 6 year old just graduated from Kindergarten and I'm in shock-awe!

We're having such an awesome spring so far, cool, rainy, very English. My garden is coming along nicely. I have to plant a few more squashes, and then I'm done.

I'm looking forward to summer, taking the girls to the pool, going to the St. Louis Zoo, garage saling and flea marketing and getting the school room in shape for fall!

I'm heading to San Diego in August to the BlogHer convention there...we'll see what it's all about.

And prepare yourselves...The Blog Guidebook is co-sponsoring a "conference" also in San Diego in February 2012. It's all about creativity, finding yourself, and living the real self. It's going to be super cool and I'll be teaching a workshop on Living a Blog-worthy Life. You know, we all read blogs that look like the writer's life is so perfect and amazing...but I want to teach you how to have that life and blog about it too. I am, therefore I blog. Not vice versa.

There will also be crafts and workshops and a marketplace. Stay tuned!

I used to love the Mr. Men series when I was a child...growing up in England we always had Mr. Men paraphernalia around the house...pencil boxes & sharpeners, tea mugs, and lots of books.

Today would have been Roger Hargreaves 78th birthday...Google gave him an ode to by designing a Google with some of the characters. Read about it here. Did you have any of those cute little square books? Who was your favorite character? I loved Mr. Square and Mr. Bump...and sometimes Mr. Giggle.

Foray into the unknown

You're never going to guess what I'm going to try! I'm going to (possibly) set up a shopping cart for a friend/client of mine who has the cutest shop and she wants to sell online. I found this nice site that does it all for you, but I have to learn the "insides" of a shopping cart! The site is Pappashop and it doesn't seem too difficult to manage.
Do you have an online shop? What do you use to checkout your customers? I'd love to hear your advice. It seems so much easier than setting up individual buttons on Paypal...oh, and I am learning some cute tricks....like a scrolling marquee in the sidebar! And I'm going to try to setting up rows of images with clickable links underneath in a POST!!! Stay tuned for more HTML damage!

Homeschool Ideas...getting prepared

Homeschool - yep, that's what we're doing. And I'm excited! Holland loved preschool and kindergarten, and she's been talking about homeschooling for quite a while now! First grade here we come! (If, somehow, it doesn't work out, she can start public school for 2nd grade just up the street a ways...but I don't think it will come to that unless I have to go to work full time or something.)
Darcy will be going to preschool and kindergarten if we can afford it. She's at an in-between stage where she's probably ready for preschool at age 3, but will start preschool at age 4-almost-5, and go to kindergarten and 5-almost-6. Or if she wants to homeschool for kindergarten we can do that.

We started to remodel our formal dining room in January, and have stalled out on it. We just don't have the energy. A light bulb went on and I got to thinking that maybe that would make a great school room! It can always convert to a dining room if we need it. Plus we already have a breakfast dining area that we always use. So...I think that might just happen! It's so exciting to think about. And we have all summer to get it finished.

I found a few blogs with great inspiration and thought you might like to have a peek...they have a lot more room than we do, but I also have less children...

Having just completed 18-20 physical therapy sessions, an MRI (at the cost of $1000 to me), an x-ray (at the cost of $500), and three doctor visits, I'm at the end of my rope. My shoulder is not cured, but has improved about 25%. That is my estimation. I'm a slow learner apparently. My PT says all the other gals with frozen shoulder were in and out with their therapy. My orthopedic specialist now suggests a "mobilization" or "manipulation. He wants to sedate me and move my arm for me. This breaks up all the frozen tissue and takes about 10 minutes. Not sure if insurance covers this of course...so we'll see. I'm not too excited about having my tissue ripped and separated.
My scapula has started moving more...all of a sudden. I started a therapy of my own actually. I'm taking Vitamin D, sesame oil, and high dose probiotics. I am also drinking an herbal joint tea you can get at the health food store. I also went to my chiropractor in California (cost of $830 for two treatments and herbal tea) who adjusted me and gave me the news I had parasites in my shoulder and heart. Everyone has different views on the shoulder issue and it's really starting to piss me off.
I'm also broke! We now don't have the cash to do anything fun this summer. We will probably purchase a pool for the girls and maybe go see our cousins in Texas. Whoopee right?
So back to the shoulder. I'm sick of it. I am actually feeling better...and I'm sleeping better, but I still wake up three or four times with pain. At night it can get to a 5 or 6 out of 10.
What is a frozen shouldered girl to do?
I Googled it.
Found this video on YouTube. There's absolutely thousands on there...so watch and beware.
I'll keep you updated on my home alone progress. If I don't start seeing change in four weeks I will consider the manipulation - seriously - ugh.

All White Bedrooms

Does anyone out there have an all-white bedroom? I'm considering this...I mean, I have off white furniture (won't be changing that I don't think), and then white wardrobe and armoire.
The carpet is off white, and I painted the walls a light aqua. My bedding is black and white toile, but needs to be replaced soon. Is it too boring to do all white? Here's an article I found on designing white rooms.
I spied some amazing wallpaper at Lowes today with a tan background and toile-ish bird and branches. I could use that for something. It was 1/2 off!

I am VERY inspired by the DIY Network show Family Under Construction's design aesthetic. They bought a horrible crack house and gutted it, painted the interior white and very minimal furnishings. It made me feel like a hoarder to see how little they had displayed. That's the feeling I want to get in my house. I searched for photos of the house but couldn't find any online. You may want to see if you can find the episodes on DIY or hulu. You will adore the Bryk family...and you'll love their finished product!

Back at home with the kids and a smelly dog

I've been back home for a week now...wow, what a transition. I have to get used to the girls bickering and talking incessantly. I have to do housework and loads of laundry all day long. My house is a mess btw. I spent all day yesterday cleaning the girls' bedrooms. I moved Holland back into the big bedroom, there's no carpet so hopefully more healthy for her. I am also pricing laminate flooring for the two carpeted bedrooms. Check out this cute style!
Now I have no room for any of my craft stuff...I'll have to put it all away in bins in the garage or along the bedroom wall. I do have an idea that I could incorporate a craft storage spot in the dining room built-ins that we're going to build...eventually.
The other thing going on is that the girls are still sick...Holland has had a fever twice in the past week. Darcy is coughing a lot. And I got a sore throat again...I don't want to be sick again...did that last week right?

This morning I got up and started digging in the garden. Gotta get that lettuce seed planted! I've got some little flowers to put in the front too.

Also starting physical therapy again today...hope it's not too terrible. I have a new physical therapist today too. Thank goodness the sun is shining and it's warmer.
We'll hopefully figure out our patio project this week and get that started. Plus I've got a new fridge coming...that's a good thing!

Love this girl of mine!

I'm in California today visiting my daughter, who just got engaged by the way. I'm only freaking out a little bit. I'm also sick with a terrible cough, cold, congestion and runny eye. Very attractive. I've got tons planned for this coming week, so please pray for me that I will get better. I'm also going to the women's retreat through our church here...can't miss that!

It sounds like I'm getting a makeover while I'm here: eyes checked & new glasses, my Chinese-herbal chiropractor to work on my shoulder, a new hair cut and color, and a pedicure.
Now if I could just have a plastic surgeon trim off the excess 50 pounds, I'd be a new woman!

Of course, I have to lose the weight myself, no one else can do it for me. I was shocked when I found out I'd gain 15 pounds over the holidays. Having a frozen shoulder and tons of pain can make a girl do NOTHING for three months.

With Kathryne and Drew's engagement, and possible wedding in about a year, I have to get in shape and look amazing for the wedding (and myself). I also want to shed a few before the big blogging event I'm going to in San Diego.

I've got the treadmill now, so I'm using that. And hopefully the shoulder will keep improving so I can continue my gardening and house improvements.

While I'm here I have quite an extensive list of shops to visit: ~~Homegoods~~, Ikea, ~~Smart & Final, Sun Thrift, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Penelope's~~, The Dish and more...oh and don't forget my dear friend Joe, Trader Joe that is. I have 20 pounds of weight in my suitcase...{hint hint}.

Off to have a shower and throw myself together...hoping to enjoy an afternoon at Descanso Gardens in the sun...

Simple Sweet Scone Recipe (British Style)

This is the most authentic, traditional scone recipe I've ever used. It reminds me of the little coffee shop where we'd go have tea and scones in the little village we used to live in.

Simple Sweet Scones

Oven: 425 degrees

2 cups unbleached flour

1/4 t. salt

2 T. baking powder

1 stick or 8 T. unsalted butter

(you can use salted and don't add salt)

1/4 cup granulated sugar or honey

1/4 cup milk (as needed)

The easiest way to mix these up is in a food processor.

In the processor bowl, place your flour, salt and baking powder. Pulse.

Cut your very cold butter into 8 pieces and add to the flour mixture.

Pulse again until the mixture resembles large crumbs or pea size clumps.

At this point sprinkle in the sugar (or not). Pulse.

Now is the fun part. Add 1/8 cup of the milk and pulse until the small clumps become one big ball of dough (adding more milk as necessary). The ball of dough should come together and roll around the processor noisily.

After your dough has reached this stage, remove and knead one or two times on a floured surface. Not too much kneading as that can make them tough and melt the butter.

Roll out to about 1 1/2 inch thickness.

Cut out with cookie cutter (shape of your choice).

Cut your dough into two even pieces and roll them into circles.

Cut each circle into 8-10 triangles, like cutting a pie.

Arrange your scones closely on a clean cookie sheet.

You may sprinkle with sugar or brush with egg white at this point (optional).

Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Cool completely before serving to children.

Top with whipped cream and jam or lemon curd.

Also great with a cup of coffee the next morning!

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't written in a while, I've had terrible pain in my arm as a result of "frozen shoulder", which you may not have heard of. I'd never heard of it. There is a technical, latin term, but I can't remember it.
So I've been focusing all my attention on The Blog Guidebook...which is coming along nicely...have you joined?

I've also been blessed to have become a contributor at The Girl Creative. I have the Thursday slot and begin in a few days...so you'll have to go over and check out my new creations...if I can think of any!

My daughter was here for two weeks last month...that was lovely. I miss that precious thing...she's twenty years old and I love hanging out with her. She's what I always dreamed I might be. Isn't that what our children should be, the best of us?

I'm heading out to California yet again, in two weeks! I'm looking forward to some R&R that's for sure. I'll also be attending the CA women's retreat up in the mountains. I really really hope the weather is good...I think I deserve a little sunshine!

Another reason for going is so my dear friend Chris can cut and color my hair. I'm looking very shlumpy right now...
And I'm going to hopefully see Dr. Charles and get his opinion on my shoulder issue and if there's anything else I should work on. (I'm sure there is!)

Now I'm just waiting for spring here in MO. It's been a horrendous winter for everyone...next winter I'm getting out of here! I'm NOT kidding!

There's a ton of other stuff happening too...I'll keep you posted.

Plus I'm working on a new blog design for myself and a new client. Can't wait to show you!

There's a cute little blog out there that just got 10,000 hits, and she's celebrating with a giveaway...Eventyrhus...check it out! That's her beautiful flower up there...smells lovely!

And, we've been tidying up the Blog Guidebook the past few days...there's a cute new button available, and we're having a giveaway so you can have your very own button! You might want to take a peek.

This gal, (me), finally got a doctor's appointment for her shoulder...poor shoulder, bad pain...and my hubs brought be a tall, white, nearly new treadmill home last night (I found it on Craigslist). So I have no more excuses...I'll get some cortisone shots and walk on the treadmill. It's going to be a good year!

We also received an i-Pod and a speaker dock. I wouldn't say it was free, but we had so many points on our credit card that we could get it free. All the interest we've been paying, we should get 50 of them for free...but that's another story.

My daughter happily received a Pell Grant this semester. We finally filled out the fafsa.org and it took all of 5 minutes and she was granted over $2500! She's eligible for more next semester. I'm kicking myself that we didn't file the past four semesters! Duh right? She has also earned her AA Degree...it came in the mail. So proud. There's more news brewing on the west coast too, but you don't need to worry about that. I'll be out there in a few weeks too...yay! It's been warm and sunny in So Cal. Makes me mad that we've been enduring ultra cold and blizzards. Unheard of!

With my darling twenty year old daughter visiting me the past few weeks, I realized that I've been neglecting the fashion/youth/beauty industry...I browsed some magazines at Target last night and can't quite grasp how they can all be saying pretty much the same thing to our young people. "Be trendy and hip. Spend money on expensive stuff. Look good, not necessarily be good. Everyone is having sex so you should too. Here's how to."
That may not be it in a nutshell, but good grief, you can't open a magazine while getting a pedicure and relaxing, without reading how to have ten orgasms a day or what he really thinks.
Trust me, I know what He thinks.
Okay, no more soapbox talk. I'm loving online and FREE magazines these days! There's a bunch, all you have to do is find a few and you'll be led to more. There are many many home decorating mags (my personal faves), but you can also find travel and fashion and beauty and shopping and mommy magazines. Most are published by a few friends who've got talent and decided to make a magazine and I think they're great. They look glossy and you can read them anywhere you've got wi-fi!

Powder Puff Recipe by Laura Calder

My new favorite chef on television (Jamie Oliver and Nigella are tied for first) is Laura Calder. She's cute, funny, and I can tell she's super nice. I've been dvr-ing her program on Cooking Channel, it's called French Food at Home. She inspired me to make Beef Bourguignon tonight. So I got interested in seeing if she blogs or has a site or something. She does. I also looked up some of her amazing recipes on Cooking Channel. I found this yummy looking dessert...holy moly. I've been in search of a spongy/cake with whipped cream and jam cookie for years. (I'd had an amazing one in Palo Alto at Peets years ago and haven't been able to forget). I plan on making this puffy delight this week. Let me know if you try any of her recipes! I'll let you know how dinner goes!

Only took me about 6 hours to make...coffee filters, hot glue and a 2.99 form. Priceless!

I think it took about 300-400 coffee filters to make this. I lost count.
They have 1000 filters at Sam's Club for $6+/-.

Getting Ready....

I just made this pincushion...I think I'll do a tutorial on it. Super easy!

I got it in my mind that a fluffy white rug would look fabulous in my living room, along with my white slip-covered sectional sofa from Ikea (love). I kept putting it off because I think they are over-priced. Well...they are! So I was shopping and saw one and got it. It looks very cute I think. I threw away all the packaging and sat back and enjoyed my white fluffy rug.
Then I saw a square of something on one corner. A stain of some sort? Indeed it is. Looks like ink from the packaging or being next to something with ink. Now I'm bummed. But I decided I'll keep it because going through the rigmarole of returning is just too much to bare.
Now, to finish the vision in my mind I have to finish re-upholstering the ottoman, and buy a few amazing red/maroon cushions I saw at TJMaxx. Also over-priced. Isn't everything?

I did do a few things to save money this year:
Shopped at Goodwill - got some gorgeous things there.
Handmade many gifts - see previous post.
Did not buy a new tree this year (although I would like to...may wait till sales after xmas).
Hubs and I are not exchanging gifts (but I am getting him a battery for his watch that I gave him two years ago). And darn it! I found the nicest leather jacket for him...and he needs a really warm coat since his car is not able to fit in the garage yet (mainly because I haven't finished my kitchen door painting project - sorry honey!)
I'm also baking tons of cookies and cakes to give to my neighbors and friends. I forgot how fun it is to give a homemade chocolate cake with ganache drizzled over it. (Used to give these to my guy friends back in the old days).
Saved a ton of cash buying photo Christmas cards through Target. I got 60 cards/envelopes for $20! A real bargain I think. I think I got too many though, as I've only used 35 so far.

Anyway...we'll be Christmassing at home again this year. I'm preparing a turkey and stuffing, and probably a pie. I found these super cute Christmas Crackers (I paid $9.99 at TJMaxx) that will make it very festive.

Talkin' A Little Whoopie

I never would have thought of making these at home. Then I found out my daughter and I should avoid wheat and gluten...and that made a big difference. My husband emailed me this link to Pumpkin Whoopies...and that started my search for a great treat. These are actually super easy to make (a child can do it), and they're great for the holiday season...If you make the chocolate version you could add crushed peppermint candies to the filling...Whoopie!

Didn't cook a turkey but we had fun anyway. Left over cranberry sauce is waiting in the fridge for Mr. Gobbler to arrive.

We went to a friend's house for Thanksgiving. It was fun and we ended up rearranging the furniture in her living room. Her husband reportedly LOVED it!

The next day we went bowling with old friends and ate tons of pumpkin cookies. These are ultimate cookies with amazing glaze and lots of butter. I ate way too many of them. My daughter in California was making them the same time I was...so it was kind of cute! We also tried to give away our dog to our friends, but they wouldn't take him (more on that later).

In The Mood!

No, not that mood.

Went walk-about with my 80 something neighbor on Friday...we went on a Home Tour for the Holidays called Cup O Cheer. We toured five homes in Springfield, including ending up at the Ronald McDonald House for tea and dessert. There was quite a bit of driving involved, but it got more fun as the day progressed. We started at 10 a.m. and started our tour at a drop dead gorgeous home (that is my fave) with huge windows, a lake out the back door, large back terraced patio, sunshine flooding in everywhere and a master bathroom to die for. I loved the walk in shower and the soaker tub with the bead board around it...and as large as my master bedroom. (Gulp!)
The day actually got me in the Christmas mood. Which is amazing. I'm not a Christmas person, and not a winter person in general. But it was all very jolly and bright...which is a good thing when it's cold and snowy outside. So I'm now in the spirit of the holidays! Yay! Just have to make it through our dull Thanksgiving (no daughter, no parents, just the in-laws - love them but they live here...).

I also wanted to mention that I finally found some sneakers/tennis shoes to go walking/exercise in! My feet are large, I've worn flip flops too much so my feet are wider too. So I looked on Amazon and found Asics Size 11.5 Wide! They are white leather with aqua blue detail. Perfect for my style! The left one feels perfect, but the right is slightly touching my big toe. What the?
I'm keeping them. Wore them to the Farmer's Mkt. yesterday and felt great.
I got a special pedicure yesterday too...bliss! I haven't had OPI Bubble Bath on my toes for MONTHS!!! The gal, Cat, did a great job and really worked on me for a whole hour! Sometimes we moms just need a bit of pampering. I was in a great mood the rest of the day. I noticed that.
Maybe my husband should get one.

No Big Box Stores!

I have decided that I'm not going to shop at Target or Walmart or Kmart for any xmas gifts. I'm going to avoid Target (my favorite place to meander...) as best I can, unless essentials such as diapers and toilet paper are necessary. Then I'll send my husband! I mean, dropping $400+ a month for stuff made in China and that I don't really remember the next day is ridiculous!

I would go to Ikea (I know some of their stuff is made in China too) if there was one around though. I'm just sayin'! And I'm planning a trip to Trader Joe's in December...but I'm planning a budget!
So, I just wanted you to know about my pledge...I'm making all my Christmas gifts this year!

I will try to post pics as I go along...or they may appear after Christmas!

My friend Amanda stopped by the day before the boutique and bought ALL of my rosette clips! Wow! So I stayed up making tons more. No one else bought any...very strange. Anyway, I'm hoping my other client/friend Debra at Inspirational Home may be ordering some of my bird's nest clips for her store! Wouldn't that be cool!?
I also sold my china cabinet and a little round table that were taking up space. I'm going to box everything up that didn't sell and save it for a garage sale in the spring. For some reason I'm really feeling the need for space and clean lines.
I'm hosting a brunch for some old friends in a few weeks so I have lots of projects to complete. Like finally just paint the living room...if I change my mind on the color I can repaint it later. Just do it! I won't go into the list, but it is endless.
I also have to comment that this fall weather has been lovely. The leaves are finally starting to fall off of our oaks...the grass is still green and I'm still picking lettuce from my garden. It's a good thing!

A Crafty Day in the Neighborhood

Today is going to be a crafty sort of day. I'm going to make:

burlap roses and rosettes, and I want to turn one into a little girl's headband
silver chain and swarofski crystal earrings
tea stained gift tags (these are so cute!)

I'm hoping my girls will go to the park with our lovely sitter and give me some quiet time.
I usually clean and roam around the house when they're not here, but I really want to spend a moment with a cup of tea and some peace.

When they get back I will run to Hobby Lobby or the fabric store - need some muslin and more burlap as I can't find it anywhere!, pick up a few grocery items (maybe), and return some stuff to TJ Maxx (or I could do it later tonight right before they close so I don't have to wait in line!). I am seriously hoping the metal stamping materials I ordered will arrive today. I want to MAKE jewelry over the weekend. It's going to be pretty cool. If it's not I'll still wear it! I'm making "blogging" jewelry. Sshhh...Don't tell anyone...I don't think anyone is doing it yet.
I can even stamp a blog name onto a silver or copper tag.

Then, I was asked by my friend Debra of Inspirational Home if I wanted to coordinate an event at her store...so I have to ponder that for a while. Maybe a cookie swap or a craft. Oh and I have to make some flyers for the blogging class. I really, really want to do that. I'm considering offering a free class in the library over the winter.

Can you tell I'm wired? I drank coffee a bit early. No more for me. Maybe some tea.

Playing Catch Up Again

I've been kind of wrapped up in The Blog Guidebook the past few weeks...and I went on a quick trip to Los Angeles...the city of dust, traffic, pollen, crowds of odd people, high gas prices, and my daughter lives there. Had a good time, but got little sleep on the old couch, and drove around way too much.
I did get together with Lyndsay twice, which was awesome. We got quite a bit accomplished. Her little ones are growing way too quickly!
Kathryne is doing well, although not feeling super healthy. She's got a lot on her plate - I think.

Anyway...I was able to get my vacuum, an Ikea comforter, some random shoes and stuff all shipped to me here. At least they're out of Kathryne's way now! I brought a few Trader Joe's items home too...of course!

When I got home I noticed I'm getting free Prime at Amazon.com. That means free two day shipping through the month of October. So I ordered an air purifier and some adorable bird stamps I've been lusting after for two years. (They were on sale too!)And a book called French-Inspired Jewelry by Kaari Meng of French General. If you don't know about her, then you need to, as her stuff is gorgeous!
I also received a cute bag from Etsy that is a bit smaller than I thought it would be, but it's still cute and I can put my phone in it and a few essentials if I don't want to carry my purse.

Darcy dropped out of preschool. She needs her momma too much right now. Plus it'll save me $100 a month! At least we tried. Her teacher said she can do all the work and does well in class after she stops crying. But that hour before school she cries the entire time and has a difficult adjustment at dropoff. It's okay though. I don't mind hanging out with her...we get some alone time...to do stuff. She likes going shopping with me, of course. Can't wait till she can stop going to the potty every 20 minutes...it'll be easier then!

Guess you could say I've gotten involved with someone else. It's keeping me so busy I don't even have time to shave my legs, let alone update my lonely blog. A Real Life Blog Party

I've been having too much fun lately. Blogging that is. And meeting gals who really want to know how to blog...the technical stuff, the easy stuff like uploading pics, and some tricks of the trade. And I've been reading new blogs like crazy. Of course, there will never be enough time in day to read enough blogs...apparently 150,000 new blogs are created every day. (Which is probably true considering how many blogs I have created!)
Today was gorgeous here...like a sign for the end of summer...it rained like crazy yesterday and then today was pitch perfect...sun, breeze, 70s...people were happy!
Went out to Ozark and tried two new places. Leola's is a super cute, clean, fun, not pricey "flea market", but it only has "booths" for the gals who own and run it. A brilliant idea if you ask me. I'm going to their fall show next week, I will take pics. We got to talking and I'm going to organize a blogging class for them and any of their friends...maybe on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. We'll do it in the store at their cute vintage tables and chairs, have hor d'ouvres and possibly even cocktails! A real blog party eh? YAYYYYY! I'm so excited!
I've also got a possibility of organizing a Vintage Tag Sale at Inspirational Home in mid-October. I have to get a list of all the flea people and invite them, but I also need to find displayers. That'll be the hard part. I'll have more info on that soon!

This has become my new favorite program on TV. After Lost, I had nothing to watch, but now I have The Choir. And you have to check out the fabulous Mr. Malone. He reminds me greatly of David Tennant, but that's a good thing. (I'm talking about a previous Dr. Who). Did you know I loved to watch British television? You do now!

A Few of My Favorite Things - for SKIN

As an allergy sufferer I am always searching for something to cure the latest puffy eyelid or to slow down the spreading of a food allergy rash. I've found several products that really work great for me, and I want to share them with you. They are available over the counter, at Target or Amazon. I buy most of my stash on Amazon, as I hate going shopping for things like this. I prefer to shop for home decor or toys. (I'm not kidding).

Do you have any secret skin products that really work? I'd love to hear yours.

#1 California Baby's Calendula Cream - the best place to get this is Target ($11.99).

It is a bit pricey, but it really works and you only need a tiny bit. If you're getting a pimple, or you have a dry spot, just dab this on when you go to bed. I also use it as a moisturizer. You can use it on babies too!

#2 Neosporin Wound Cleanser Foam - available everywhere. Here it is under $4.

This foam saves me every time. If one of the kids falls and gets a boo boo, then they call for the bubbles! You squirt this on and the foaming bubbles distract them and clean the wound at the same time. I give this as a gift paired with bandaids and other first aid items.

#3 alba un-petroleum Jelly - This stuff is amazing. It's helped us a lot with my daughter's eczema. It doesn't smell bad, and it helps keep dry skin lubricated. I buy it in bulk here and it saves a ton.

#4 hope in a jar from Philosophy (available online & at Sephora) - I just tried this for the first time and I like it a lot. I've been putting in on the backs of my hands...they are looking much older than fortysomething lately. It smells a little odd, but it works great. I am going to try it on my face next...I'm sure it will give me hope.

#5 Burt's Bees Rosewater & Glycerin Toner - reminds me of England for some reason. I have always adored rosewater...it smells divine and I'm not afraid of it being too harsh for me face. I definitely recommend this to delicate skin gals. It's around $12.

#6 Jason Sunbrellas Sport Sunscreen - the smell reminds me of the days we slathered ourselves with tropical sun tan oil. It really works and it stayed on great where I applied it. Don't tell the rest of my skin, where I miss applying while I was on the lake. Available at a great price here.

Some other items I use: Nioxin conditioner (helps with skin problems too), Boots brand make up at Target, Trader Joe's French hand soap with orange and honey, and I just started taking a Vitamin D3 supplement. It seems to be helping with some of my skin allergies.

Bouquet List

My sweet friend and biz partner recently shared her "bucket" list. I thought I would post mine...so at least I can remember what I want to accomplish (not things I want to help my girls accomplish which is a LONG list).

Start swimming again (I used to be pretty good)
Join a local choir and sing in concerts
Learn to watercolor (this is planned for winter!)
Travel more, like Australia, Norway, Italy, South of France
Declutter and streamline my home as much as possible
Never give up trying to find a business to run from home
Create time to go on dates with my husband (which we never do now)
Work on family traditions and scrapbooks
Create a budget for us and start using it!!!
Write more letters and cards to send to friends
Get in better physical shape so I can feel good mentally
Live by the beach one day

So that's a shortlist for now. I have tons of "projects" I'd love to accomplish, but I think the above is more about me. I know that I don't do anything just for me...like more frequent pedicures (not one every six months), massages (yeah right!), exercise every day so I can lose weight and feel good about myself and buy new clothes!!!

In other news I met some lovely people at a local church near my house, and I volunteered at this week's VBS. It was fun, but I'm so out of it now...totally exhausted. Next week I will focus on making my house fabulous and clean for when Kate and Drew are here.

A moment in time...Sunday evening

I was outside this evening and picked at least 20 pounds of tomatoes! Whoa! I'm talking big boys!
I also picked over 10 lbs of cucumbers and some sweet green onions...and two huge scallop squash. I guess it's going to be pickle making time again on the farm (I mean at the cottage!). I'm going to have to figure out a way to make easy sauce too...has anyone used their food processor to pulse the tomatoes and then cook it to make a pasta sauce? Can that be done? I can't waste these sweet things...already thrown a dozen or more away because they started going off...not irradiated ya know?

Also just watched Broadcast News again for the 10th time. I LOVE THAT MOVIE. It's what made me fall for William Hurt. I guess he was kind of a bad guy in the movie though. And I love it when Holly Hunter cries and gives herself a "time out" or "moment". I felt a lot like her in my life. Try to watch it if you haven't seen it. Let me know what you think about the bunny scene! hee hee.

I bought a bunch for 10cents each... here they are being sterlized...
The pickles have turned out beautifully...

They are small but perky.

Cut a circle of cloth (I used old curtains) and tie with cord..

The Story Behind The Pickles:

I'm growing organic cucumbers in my garden (among many other things) and they are coming in quite strong. I really have no idea what to do with the little green suckers.

Then I remembered a box of yard sale jars I got from the neighbors, 10 cents a jar!

I immediately went to my local Walmart (where I don't go very often) and picked up some pickling spice and white vinegar. I realized later that I had those things already...just didn't know where.

I got all the jars out and washed them, threw them in a pot of boiling water to sterilize, meanwhile, washing and cutting up my cucumbers. I also had another smaller pot with the vinegar, sugar and spices heating up. As the jars were done I pulled them out with a noodle scooper and carefully started stuffing them with cucumbers. I couldn't decide the best way to cut them, but I think the spears fit nicely.
When they were all full, I used a ladle to pour the hot pickling liquid over them, leaving a 1/2 inch gap between the pickles and the lid. I screwed the warm lids on and placed them back in the slow boiling water for 5 minutes. This took a while, because I have no canning supplies...ahem!
I used cookie sheets to catch drips and water sploshes, and placed the hot jars on one on the stove. As they cooled I heard little pops. It was so neat.

I have given several jars away already to neighbors and friends...so I decided to come up with a way to prettify the jars...I cut up an old Ikea curtain, and placed a label from The Graphics Fairy on the front. A pretty darn cute hostess/host gift I think.

Only 12 more jars to attire...the little jewels are so sweet.
Now I have to find more jars to pickle in, as I have POUNDS of cucumbers (and tomatoes too) coming in.
It's the farmer's life for me this week. Yeeeehawwww!

Your eyes do not deceive you, that is a new issue of Country Home! I just read on Holiday With Matthew Mead that it was published for summer, and that there may possibly be more to come...well wouldn't that be awesome???
I'm off to B&N today (with my two little girls, oh no!) to see if I can find a copy for myself...

I did score several issues of Country Home from 2007 and 2008 at a flea market last week...I've really been enjoying the ambiance there! I found back issues of Country Living, Martha Stewart, and Reminisce for free at a church garage sale too...I'm in magazine heaven right now.

UPDATE: I went to B&N and they had a lovely huge stack of Country Home! I about died when I saw the price was $12.99! I used my discount card and that saved me 10%. Happy Belated 4th

Stayed busy on the 4th, made a "pie" out of a shortbread crust, cream cheese, English custard powder and some lovely organic berries. Also spent some time in the garage, still cleaning. And went to my friend Bonnie's house to help her catalog and photograph some of her beautiful vintage pieces that she plans on selling. I'm also designing her blog and Etsy banner! I'm so privileged! Bonnie is also going to teach me how to water color this winter! She's the amazing gal that taught me how to spray paint my brick wall instead of with a brush...can't wait to show you her stuff. After her house, I stopped at Andy's Frozen Custard and brought some treats home. We ate dinner and dessert in front of the tv watching fireworks. A pretty good day overall...

Delicious Grain-Free Waffles

Okay, I just made these waffles and they were pretty darn good for gluten free and grain free!!
(My middle daughter is allergic to grains so I'm always trying...)

For a good time, make these:

In a bowl mix 2 eggs, 3/4 cup gluten free baking mix, 1/2 cup coconut flour, 1 cup milk curdled with 2 T. vinegar, 1 cup water, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. baking soda, 2 tsp. organic raw sugar, 1/4 cup olive oil. Mix until not lumpy. Don't pour all the water in at once, just add as needed to make the batter smooth enough to pour.
*You may add 1/4 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. vanilla if you like. You may also substitute milk for almond or rice milk, and the eggs for egg replacer or boiled flax seeds. And check your ingredients in the baking powder and soda, if you're allergic to corn there is cornstarch in these.

Heat your waffle iron and brush butter or oil onto it before pouring each waffle.

I topped ours with homemade whipped cream sweetened with honey and apple sauce.

Oh my. These were devoured by all. (Don't taste uncooked batter, very yucky).

Creative Juices...Let them flow!!!

I've decided to jump on board and be in the mix of the creative bloggers...even though I don't particularly feel creative at the moment. I have labeled myself a dabbler. I pretty much dabble in everything at some point, but at the moment have been enjoying painting furniture and cabinetry, and collecting art supplies that I hope I will use one day.
We moved to this house in late November last year, and I have only recently aquired a place that I feel comfortable enough in to call my office. It's actually the sunroom that was enclosed, it has lots of windows and air conditioning and it is very quiet. There is a lovely view of my huge back garden (which I adore and am afraid of all at the same time) and vegetable patch.
My creative moments include the following: spray painting, stamping, faux painting, sewing, jewelry making, baking, and blogging like a mad woman. With the advent of the Blog Guidebook and Beautify My Blog, I get busy in spurts, usually when I am busy with my baking business or when I'm refinishing the kitchen cabinets (post coming soon).
So hope you enjoy seeing my little corner of the world. The midwest "ain't" that bad in the spring and summer...I'm actually starting to enjoy my beautiful home.
